narbonne languedoc villa rental, south france

Villa Romarin is in Narbonne, a town renowned in Roman times as a producer of honey flavoured with rosemary - a herb that grows plentifully in Languedoc and the south of France.

The holiday villa is set in a quiet residential area, away from the main road, approached by a small side road and then its own private road that leads to its secure entrance with electric gates.

The recently architect designed villa is constructed on a hill side, with panoramic views, of Narbonne, its ancient roman port of La Nautique, the Etang de Bages, and on the horizon the endless beaches of the Mediterranean at Gruissan.

The villa has a landscaped garden with lawn, Mediterranean plants, olive trees and palms, with a large 13 x 5 meters swimming pool, with transparent retractable top. The garden is maintained regularly by a gardener, and there is an automatic watering system. At night, lighting can be turned on to illuminate the garden, and swimming pool.

The drive way leads up to a wide sheltered parking area in front and to the side of 2 garages (used as a games room), set to the side of the house. There is parking for a number of cars. The main entrance is approached via steps, although wheelchair access could be provided.

The main entrance door opens onto a large living dining area, with at its centre an open fireplace. There are a number of sofas as well as armchairs, and tables. There is a wide screen satellite flat TV (Sky English, and international channels), with CD player. The large room looks onto the terrace, and swimming pool, which has distant views of Narbonne, and on the horizon the glittering Mediterranean sea.

To the left side is a fitted  kitchen, with large built-in fridge, dish washer, 90 centimeters wide cooker and microwave oven. In addition to the breakfast table for 4, there is a large dining table with seating for 8 persons in the main room. Glass sliding doors open from the kitchen area onto the terrace where there is a built in barbecue; as well as outside furniture that includes a table with chairs to seat 8 -10

A door leads from the kitchen into a utility room with washing machine, utility sink, ironing board, and iron. There is a door to the outside where there is a drying area with washing line. Another door leads into double garage with table tennis table and  fridge for storing drinks. Another door opens into the "maid's room",  with a single sofa bed, with French windows onto the terrace; with a door to an en suite shower room with shower, washbasin, and separate WC. (Having direct access to the terrace, this bathroom  is ideal  when guests are using the swimming pool.)

On the other side of 65m2 living dining room, to the right of the main entrance, an alcove leads into an office area, with door to separate WC with washbasin.

From the living area  there is a door through to the master bedroom suite. To the left, there is a separate WC and a dressing room. The bedroom with double bed, has to one side a glassed in spa/shower/jacuzzi, and twin washbasins. Glass doors open from the bedroom onto the terrace, with access to the swimming pool.

A lovely curved staircase  leads up to the first floor where from the landing with separate WC, doors open on to 3 bedrooms.

There is a  double bedroom, with double bed, with bath with shower attachment with screen and washbasin, in the room, where glass doors open onto a terrace.

There is a twin bedroom with 2 single beds, with en suite shower and washbasin, that also has access to the same terrace.

There is a twin bedroom with 2 single beds, with en suite shower and washbasin, which has a window with commanding views across to the Mediterranean.

The house is south facing and benefits from the Mediterranean sun throughout the day. The views from the house are panoramic and the veranda/terrace means that one can sit out for breakfast and meals much of the year.

Even at Christmas and the coolest parts of the year in Narbonne, it is possible to sit outside.

The house benefits from electric shutters throughout, providing excellent security and shading from the strong French sunlight.

There is also air conditioning with reversible heat in the living room, and master bedroom suite.

Under floor heating on the ground floor means that there is always a constant temperature in winter.

The garden and the swimming pool for the most part are not overlooked so privacy is assured in the main areas of the property.

There is ADSL high speed internet with wifi.

Villa Romarin is located in an exclusive residential part of Rochegrise, on the outskirts of Narbonne. It is amongst other homes with large gardens, where privacy and tranquillity are important. The property is a very short walk from being in the countryside - and one can find quite delightful walks that have hilltop views of the Corbieres hills, and the sparkling coastal area, and Mediterranean Sea. Also within easy walking distance is a small shopping area of a baker (with chairs outside to take a cup of coffee with your croissant), a superette, a greengrocer, a hairdresser and a laundry. There is also a regular bus service that goes into the centre of Narbonne, and for the price of one euro, bus rides to the beach at Gruissan and Narbonne Plage.

Just a short drive and you are in central Narbonne at the Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, and the main square. On each Thursday and Sunday there is a large open air market, that runs along the Canal de la Robine (an arm of the Canal du Midi - a UNESCO heritage treasure).

Go to Les Halles, the daily covered market, where you will find all the traditional shops and stores, and little bars, that are essential in France. Other sights include Charles Trenet's birthplace which contains a museum that celebrates this joyful French singer; the Horreum, an underground Roman warehouse, and the roman autoroute - Via Domita, dating back to when Narbonne was the capital of Roman Southern France.

The city has numerous restaurants, shops, cafés, and has music, and theatre festivals, historic pageants, and numerous events throughout the year; and also has a lively theatre, which also screens often films in version originale (for example in English!)

15 minutes eastward, over the craggy hills of La Clape, are the glorious sandy Mediterranean beaches of Narbonne Plage, Cabanes de Fleury, St Pierre sur Mer, and Gruissan. Every activity is catered to : wind and kite surfing, water sports, swimming, tennis, skate boarding, naturism, walking and climbing.

Close to the villa is the road to Bages with art galleries and restaurants, and Peyriac sur Mer, which runs along the marshes and etangs, where often you will find views of flocks of pink flamingos and sea birds. A little further south, there is the Wild Life Park and zoo at Sigean. A little to the west is the Cistercian Fontfroide Abbey, founded in the 11th century, with a lovely rose garden, and fine restaurant.

For special day trips visit the Medieval Castle and Town of Carcassonne (45 minutes drive) and the hilltop Cathar castles of Queribus and Peyrepertuse in the high Corbieres, in the direction of Perpignan and Spain. You can even cross the border into Spain and visit Salvador Dali's flamboyant museum at Figueres (1 hour drive), or for 40 minutes longer his home and museum in fishing village of Cadaques.
