OUVEILLAN

Ouveillan is lovely village just 20 minutes from Narbonne. It is situated on a brow of a hill, with a fine Roman church dating back to the 11 th century.

Neolithic tribesmen lived in the area 7000 years ago and was started as a retirement holiday home for a Roman Legion "Ovillius", growing grapes and olives in the 1st century AD (a hundred years after Narbonne was founded by the Romans).

With the devastation of Narbonne by the Vandals, and later the Visigoths, in the early 400 AD, Ovillianum changed rulers to the Visgoths. It grew from the original villa bulding to become a village. 300 years later the Arabs were occupiers for 50 years. A chapel was founded here in 1090, later to become the church of St John the Baptist. The village was burnt down by the British Black Prince in 1355

Gradually through the Wars of Religion, the French Revolution the village has become what it is today - a thriving living village. A village that boasts a Cave Cooperative that actively supports charity by sponsoring International Pop Music concerts each year in the Summer. A village that has theme based events in its streets from the Fete de Vendange in October, to Country and Western weekends, to Markets, and historic dramas played out in Fontcalvy a historic monument a short walk from the village, - a grange built in the 13th Century, by the Cistercian Abbey of Fontfroide.

The village boasts: 2 general food stores, 2 bakers, 1 butcher, 1 newsagent, 2 cafe/bars, 3 restaurants, a hairdresser, 2 doctors, dentist, drug store, and a number of wineries. Market days: Winter - Tuesday, Friday; Summer - Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday morning.

SURROUNDING AREA

Just a few minutes drive to the north is the Canal du Midi that was built in the mid 1600s and runs from Toulouse to Sete. You will meet the canal at La Croisade, where there is an excellent restaurant - take a walk along the banks of the canal and enjoy! Further north, after 25 minutes drive you are in the heart of the Minervois wine making region at the picturesque Cathar village of Minerve. Perched on a rocky outcrop and approached by a bridge spanning the gorge of the river Cesse it was the site of the famous siege and martyrdom of the Cathar Parfaits by Simon de Montfort in 1210

One hour's drive to the west is the magnificent medieval walled Cité of Carcassonne and beyond, towards the foothills and mountains of the Pyrenees are the outstanding Cathar castles of Queribus and Peyrepertus rising out from the peaks of the Corbieres.

Beziers and Narbonne are 2 sizable towns that are with 25 minutes drive and provide grand cathedrals, museums, markets for the most avid shopper, shopping centers, and numerous special events, concerts, and fetes. Ten minutes further on are sandy Mediterranean beaches that seemingly stretch for miles from Cap d'Agde to Gruissan Plage.

Activities from golf to water sports abound, as well as numerous fine restaurants for dining, and exhilarating wine caves offering scintillating wines for tasting and purchasing at very reasonable prices.
