Saint Henry Holiday Rental
We the owners (Dominique & Tom) live in the converted bergerie -- sheep-barn -- attached to the farmhouse: each dwelling has its own verandah for dining outdoors, not overlooked by the other.
Although we live on site, our tenants have almost exclusive use of the pool and gardens - our presence is a discreet one (we are on hand to help if needed) and there is a lot of space in which to be on ones' own!
DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION
Ground floor: patio, entrance hall, dining and kitchen area (fridge/freezer, gas cooker; micro-wave, dish-washer, coffee-maker etc) downstairs bathroom (shower, h/basin, W.C.) ; sitting-room with double-doors opening to verandah, open-fire with logs provided, TV , DVD, stereo, phone. There is wi-fi internet access.
First floor: double bedroom with en-suite bathroom (bath, shower, W.C., h/basin); double bedroom ; two bedrooms each with 2 single beds; bathroom (shower, h/basin, W.C.).
Second floor: Attractive huge attic-bedroom with four single-beds. Two cot-beds & high-chair are available.
Outside: lawns, lots of trees for shade, and terraces, surrounding pool which is 6m x 12m plus paddling-pool (total 80 sq m). Washing-machine in barn.
The pool is solar-heated, specially-insulated, making swimming comfortable until end October, has ultra-violet filtration system and underwater lighting. The garden has sun-loungers, tables, chairs, barbecues and table-tennis table and paths which lead off down the valley and on to the moors. There are mature trees everywhere providing shade in the heat of the summer and a leafy background for the terraces and pool.

ABOUT THE AREA
St. Henry stands on the slopes of a valley, high above the fortified village of Laurac, once a centre of Cathar resistance to the crusades in the violent Middle Ages ; now the only sign of menace is the occasional bird of prey wheeling above this peaceful place. The house stands on its own, down its own lane, its forty acres merging with moors and common land -- it is as if the house has the whole valley to itself. You can roam wherever you like in the valley and on the moors, enjoying the wild-life and views in all directions. unless you wish to spend all day in or around the pool! Despite the rural calm, it is only ten minutes to the nearest supermarket and there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants in nearby towns and villages.
Near to Fanjeaux, historic hill-village associated with Cathar martyrs - with shops, restaurants, bar, and to walled city of Carcassonne, registered by Unesco as protected world heritage site (as also is nearby Canal du Midi).
15 minutes is Carcassonne with its medieval city on top of a hill, overlooking the Aude valley, and has become the background to many a period film. Castles are found here aplenty - particularly in the Montagne Noire (Lastours, Saissac), or in the Corbieres with the precipitous Queribus, Peyrepertuse providing good day outings.
The canal du midi, a few kilometers from Bram provides a perfect place to walk or cycle. It was built in the 1660's and recently has been awarded a world heritage status by UNESCO - and rightly so - there are many charming villages to visit - including Castelnaudary ( 16kms) where you can sample the local culinary dish - the cassoulet.
There are golf courses at Carcassonne and Castelnaudary, and there are tennis courts in Bram & Fanjeaux, as well as horse riding available close by. For those seeking water sports - the endless beaches of the Mediterranean are about a 50 minutes drive.

Payment is based on € Euro value, £ sterling and $ shown are only approximate. Rental is Saturday to Saturday.
The rents quoted here include all services, bedding, house towels and fuel. An additional 90 euros is added to rentals over Christmas, Easter, New Year
