Montpellier. University and Capital town of Languedoc. Gorgeous old center with splendid houses and museums. Bofill's 20C architecture Antigone. Walk along the cosmopolitan place de la Comédie and visit Musée Fabre. Young town - with great music and don't miss the Dance Festival!
Nimes. This city, festooned with Roman ruins including a superb ampitheatre, had its water supply via the magnificent Pont du Gard, the site of many a concert and drama event. Norman Foster again rises again and created the glass and steel Carré d'Art - Modern art galler, complements the Roman Temple Maison Carrée. Along with the Art Festival Nimes is well known for tis Feria in Spring (Feb), Pentecoste (june), and September (Wine)
Olargues. Picturesque village with medieval arch bridge, and tower.

Aigues Mortes. Founded in 1246 by Louis IX to be France's port on the Mediterranean. Fortified town, with narrow walls, moat, and charming streets. Chock full of shops, restaurants, as well as more ordinary abodes. Picturesque.
Camargue. Marshlands from Montpellier to Marseiles at the mouth of the Rhone. White horses. Behatted cowboys. Hippy and naturist outposts along the coasts. Fishing. Nature. Bicycle country.
Uzès. Lovely historic town, well worth the visit. 1st Duchy of France. The Tour Fenestrelle, church tower, is next to the lovely St Etienne church. Plan to go on Saturday to take advantage of one of best markets of the area (truffles are a specialty) |
