Places to visit:
St Guilhem le desert: UNESCO world heritage site, and lovely abbey village, surrounded by steep hills (lovely walking). Abbey church of Saint Gellone is atmospheric (half the cloisters are now in New York - you can guess where!). Streets are full of artists' galleries in the Summer months.
Lodeve. One of the best cathedrals of the area - Cathdrale St Fulcran soars above the town. The pretty Pont de Montfort and the Musée Fleury with good exhibitions, make this town worth visiting.

Lac du Salagou. Surrounded by iron rich soil, the red colors of the hills the artificial lake give it an unearthly appearance. Take a wander around the nearby villages of Octon (which seems at times hippyesque!), and Moureze with the Cirque du Moureze with pinnacles of dolomite that make one think of spaghetti westerns. Gignac and Claremont l'Herault are destinations for markets, and restaurants.
Villeneuvette, like Bournville is a factory village and was created by Colbert to make wool products. The red brick buildings are evocative - and there is a reasonable restaurant. Also visit nearby Pioch Farrus - a copper mine dating back 5000 years! |
