Places to visit:
Canal du Midi. UNESCO HERITAGE AWARD. Runs from Toulouse to Sete, joining the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Designed and built by Pierre Paul Riquet, who was born in Beziers. He worked as a tax inspector, and owned lands near Revel. In 1666 he started building the canal from Toulouse to Trebes, and 14 years later it was completed, making it possible to go as far as Agde and Sete.
Toulouse. A technology city dominated by Cathedral of St Sernin and river Garonne. University town, and aerospace center (concorde, ariane rocket, airbus). Red brick buildings, fine restaurants, and fine museums.
Naurouze. Highest point on the canal, where the water feeder canal from the Montagne Noire enters the canal.
Castelnaudary. Capital of Lauragais region and gastronomic center for Cassoulet - (white beans and pork, sausages etc). On a rise above Canal du Midi's Grand Bassin

Bram. Circulade village, near Fanjeaux - once Troubadour center and 1st Dominican priory.
Carcassonne. Famous Medieval city and castle, used often in films.
Trebes. Canal bridges, and fine church of St-Etienne with 14th C wood beamed ceiling with painted faces.
Homps. Numerous restaurants, and nearby Olonzac - lively market village.
Le Somail. Hat museum and large second hand bookshop. 18c bridge, and restaurants.
Capestang. Fine fortress church and lowest canal bridge, lively port.

Oppidum d'Enserune. Pre roman hill top town with views of Etang de Montady, pie shaped irrigations fields created in the 13th century
Beziers. Huge Cathedral, Feria, and 9 locks on the canal (Neuf ecluses).
Villeneuve Les Beziers, pleasant town with great antique markets. Agde.12th C Fortress cathedral, old fishing port on Herault river - nearby Cap d'Agde resort sprawl and nudist town.
Sete.
Pretty Venice like fishing port, with contemporary art museum, good nightlife, and home to poets Brassens and Valery.
