On the opposite bank is Les Halles, the daily covered market, where you will find all the traditional shops and stores, and little bars, that are essential in France. Other sights include Charles Trenet's birthplace which contains a museum that celebrates this joyful French singer; the Horreum, an underground Roman warehouse, and the roman autoroute - Via Domita, dating back to when Narbonne was the capital of Roman Southern France.
The city has numerous restaurants, shops, cafés, and has music, and theatre festivals, historic pageants, and numerous events throughout the year; and also has a lively theater, which also screens often films in version originale (for example in English!)
15 minutes eastward, over the craggy hills of La Clape, are the glorious sandy Mediterranean beaches of Narbonne Plage, Cabanes de Fleury, St Pierre sur Mer, and Gruissan. Every activity is catered to : wind and kite surfing, water sports, swimming, tennis, skate boarding, naturism, walking and climbing.
5 minutes to the south the magical road to Bages with art galleries and restaurants, and Peyriac sur Mer, saunters along the marshes and etangs, with flocks of pink flamingos and sea birds, across causeways, to salty inland lakes for those seeking weightless dips.
A little to the west is the Cistercian Fontfroide Abbey, founded in the 11th century, with a lovely rose garden, and fine restaurant. For quick and must trips visit the Medieval Castle and Town of Carcassonne (45 minutes drive) and the hilltop Cathar castles of Queribus and Peyrepertuse in the high Corbieres, in the direction of Perpignan and Spain.
