ABOUT SURROUNDING AREA This region, the Languedoc, is France's best kept secret. Sleepy villages of sun-warmed stones and red tiled roofs unspoilt by mass tourism abound. You’ll find magnificent scenery ideal for rambles on foot or horseback amongst herb-scented hills, with deep gorges tumbling into cool, inviting rivers. It is France’s largest, up-and-coming wine producing region and there are many opportunities to taste its excellent wines. Yet just 40 minutes away is the sophisticated town of Montpellier offering the arts, music festivals, shopping and an international airport. An hour's drive takes you to splendid Roman towns such as Avignon, Nîmes and Arles. Montpeyroux is a 10 minute walk/couple of minutes’ drive from the property. It has an excellent boulangerie, grocer and butcher, a wine bar/restaurant and bar/cafe which both provide meals at lunchtime and in the evening. All services, shops, restaurants and a Saturday morning market which is one of the best in the area, can be found in the town of Gignac, 7 kms. Antique shops abound in historic Pezenas, a 20 minute drive. There are cultural events, festivals and concerts in Montpeyroux and nearby towns and villages throughout the year. The cool, inviting river Hérault provides an excellent swimming spot 5 kms away, with a natural, pebbly beach and canoe hire. Lake Salagou for swimming, fishing and non-motorised water sports, is a 20 minute drive, Mediterranean beaches 35 minutes and the surrounding countryside is ideal for walking. ACCESS The closest airport is Montpellier, serviced by BA and Ryanair from the UK and direct flights from Paris. Montpellier also has an international train station and the TGV takes just 3h30m from Paris. The airports of Nimes, Carcassonne, and Perpignan are within an hour's drive, Toulouse and Marseille two and a half hours.
