![]() DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION La Serpent is some 17 kms south west of Limoux, reached through some of the most beautiful and stunning country. The road winds through magical villages, with magnificent views across wide valleys to the white capped majestic Pyrenees. The house is approached down a short but secluded drive from the main road that runs through the side of the village (the house also has a main entrance from one of the narrow village streets). To the front of the house there is a large swimming pool (10m x 5m) with paved surround, perfect for sunbathing. To one side is a pool house, with shower. Adjoining this is a summer kitchen, with barbecue, with gas burners, and an area to prepare the food. Next to the house on one side is a shaded dining wood terrace, with grapevine arbour, and on the other side, behind the pool and next to the house there is a storage studio where there is a washing machine and table tennis table. (Additional games provided include electronic darts, and boules; bicycles are available for hire) Entering the house from the garden, via french windows, one enters a large dining/living room with splendid open fire, table for 8, satellite TV, piano, and stereo. The room has traditional style beams, and at the back of the room there is a corridor that leads to the front door of the house that opens onto the narrow streets of the village. To one side there is a kitchen, fully equipped with dishwasher, cooker, fridge/freezer, and microwave. On the otherside of the corridor is a laundry/ironing room, as well as a WC, with washbasin. Stairs lead up to a central landing, off which there are 4 double bedrooms, with bunk beds in one of the double rooms. ABOUT THE AREA The area around La Serpent is full to the brim with phenomenal landscape, from the swirling waters of the River Aude as it thunders through river gorges, to the lush farm land and thick forests. History too plays a major role in highlights of interest from the mysterious Rennes-Le-Chateau, to the beauty of the abbey at the hot springs town of Alet-les-Bains. All of this magnificently seranaded by the majesty of the Pyrenees, which provide a superb background. Rennes-Le-Chateau is famous for the mysterious wealth of Father Saunière, the village priest. Many have speculated that the wealth came from a knowledge of the site of the Holy Grail, or a pay off by protectors of a secret that would turn the church upside down. Books have been written about the mysterious placing of mountains, buildings, etc in geometric patterns. There are stories of the Templars and the Cathars. Indeed the land around La Serpent seems to have something of the magical about it in its mysterious beauty. The Cathar castles of Arques (with nearby lake for swimming), and Carcassonne, are trips back in history, as are the abbeys, such as at St Polycarpe, St Hilaire and Alet-les-bains (where you can also enjoy both the therapeutic waters and the delights of the casino!). Activities abound, from the less active, such as driving to historical and natural wonders, and visiting many a fine restaurant, and tasting fine wines from local vignerons, to golf (close to Carcassonne), fishing, walking, swimming, cycling, climbing, caving, and horse riding and in winter - skiing in the Pyrenean slopes. ACCESS International airports are close at hand. For visitors coming from London - Ryanair flies into Carcassonne (45 minutes). Toulouse and Montpellier are each about 2- 2 1/2 hours drive. The railway goes as far as Limoux (20 minutes) and Quillan, via Carcassonne.
