VILLENEUVE AND SURROUNDING AREA
Villeneuve-les-Beziers is a bustling wine-growing village on the Canal du Midi (which has recently been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, and was built in the 1600's).
Villeneuve was first settled by the Spanish in 812. The church dates back to the 12th century and the village was completely enclosed by 1500. The population of the village is now about 3000, rising to 5000 in the Summer months
The village offers a host of services: there are a number of market stalls selling fresh produce, two bakers, a general store, 2 cafés, 2 restaurants, a pizzeria, a post office, 2 banks, and on Sundays, people come from afar to visit the marché aux puces (flea market) where old relics, brocante, and bric a brac can be found. There are also tennis courts and a path along the Canal du Midi offering pleasant canal side walks.
A number of buses go to nearby Beziers, with its magnificent cathedral, market (go on Friday for a large flower market), numerous shops, old narrow city streets, and museums. The city boasts many festivals throughout the year, including a summer festival, that includes music, theatre, spectacles, and bull fighting.
The Mediterranean is a mere 8 kms away, and numerous beach resorts such as Cap d'Agde, Serignan Plage, Marseillan Plage offer numerous facilities. 30 minutes away are the Cevennes and the Minervois - hills and mountains with Cathar villages such as Minerve, astride deep gorges, and microclimates like Roquebrun "the little Nice of Languedoc" with Mediterranean gardens, and canoeing on the River Orb. The area is literally drenched in history from castles, to abbeys (Valmagne, with magnificent wine), and historic towns like Pezenas (famed for Moliere and antiques)
ACCESS
International airports are at Beziers (15 minutes), Carcassonne (1 hour), Perpignan (1 hour), Montpellier (45 minutes), Toulouse (2 1/2 hours). There is a TGV railway station at Beziers, from where buses go to Villeneuve. Rental cars are available both at the railway station and at the airports.
