The 12-14th century Palace of the Kings of Majorca "Le Palais des Rois de Majorque" dominates the city, and often hosts concerts in its gardens. The outstanding French gothic cathedral of St. Jean, which is beautiful to see in and out, and best visited during Easter - where the Procession de la Sanch (Christ's Blood) a 500 year old Catalan tradition is impressive and haunting. Handsome houses and broad squares surround the church (that also boasts the only cemetery cloister in France). Also visit Le Castillet-Casa Pairal with its wonderful folk museum, with panoramic views from its roof terrace from Mediterranean sea to Canigou and the Pyrenees. Its a huge event - well worth seeing! ![]() Collioure THE SURROUNDING AREA Perpignan is the perfect base to discover Languedoc Roussillon. 15 minutes away are the seemingly endless sandy beaches from Canet Plage to Argeles-sur-Mer. Further south is the art mecca of Collioure where Picasso, Matisse, and the Fauvists discovered color that made their world renowned. Collioure surrounded by the peaks of the Pyrenees, chock full of castles, and vineyards clinging to steep hill sides. Then further inland there is Ceret, with more art, with a fine modern art museum, and a colorful market on Saturdays. Or go to Villfranche-sur-conflent, where you can take the Little Yellow train and marvel at deep valleys, and yet more castles, and mountain villages. If its snow and skiing its all there too - with Font Romeu. Inland there are pretty churches, and medieval abbeys with magical cloisters at Serrabone Priory and Abbey of St Michel de Cuxa, under the mountain peak of Canigou.
